Spaced Repetition

Remember more, study less

StudyBuddy combines AI flashcard generation with the SM-2 spaced repetition algorithm. Upload your notes, get flashcards automatically, and let the algorithm schedule your reviews at scientifically optimal intervals.

How spaced repetition works in StudyBuddy

The science-backed workflow that replaces passive re-reading with active recall

1

Upload your study material

Drop in lecture notes, PDFs, or paste text. StudyBuddy accepts any text-based study content.

2

AI generates flashcards

The AI identifies key concepts, terms, and relationships in your material and creates question-answer flashcards.

3

Review with active recall

See the question side, try to recall the answer, then flip the card. Rate how well you remembered (1–5).

4

SM-2 schedules your next review

Cards you struggled with appear again sooner. Cards you knew well get pushed further out. Over time, you spend less time on easy material.

How review intervals grow

First review1 day
Second review3 days
Third review7 days
Fourth review16 days
Fifth review35 days
Sixth review60+ days

Intervals increase as you demonstrate mastery

Why spaced repetition outperforms cramming

Fights the forgetting curve

Without review, you forget ~70% of new information within 24 hours. Spaced repetition targets the exact moment before you'd forget, strengthening memory each time.

More efficient use of time

By focusing review on material you're about to forget (not material you already know), you spend less total time studying while retaining more.

Compounds over time

Each successful review extends the interval. After a few weeks, cards you've mastered only need review once a month — freeing time for new material.

Frequently asked questions

What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a study technique where you review material at increasing intervals over time. Instead of cramming everything in one session, you review a flashcard after 1 day, then 3 days, then 7 days, then 14 days, and so on. Research consistently shows this leads to significantly better long-term retention compared to massed study sessions.

What algorithm does StudyBuddy use for spaced repetition?

StudyBuddy uses the SM-2 (SuperMemo 2) algorithm, one of the most well-tested spaced repetition algorithms. After each flashcard review, you rate how well you remembered it, and SM-2 calculates the optimal interval before your next review. Cards you struggle with appear more frequently; cards you know well appear less often.

How is this different from Anki's spaced repetition?

Anki also uses a variant of the SM-2 algorithm, and it's an excellent tool for spaced repetition. The key difference is that StudyBuddy generates flashcards automatically from your notes using AI, while Anki requires you to create cards manually (or find shared decks). If you want AI-powered card generation with built-in spaced repetition, StudyBuddy handles both. See our detailed comparison for more.

How long before I see results with spaced repetition?

Most students notice improved recall within 1–2 weeks of consistent use. The technique becomes more powerful over time as the algorithm learns which material you find easy or difficult. For exam prep with a shorter timeline, even a few days of spaced repetition outperforms equivalent time spent re-reading.

Do I need to study every day for spaced repetition to work?

Consistency helps, but perfection isn't required. StudyBuddy tracks your review schedule and adjusts intervals if you miss a day. The key is regular review sessions — even 15–20 minutes daily is more effective than occasional multi-hour cramming sessions.
